Easter Mass with Pasolini: The Gospel According to St. Matthew

A Marxist, an atheist, and a filmmaker – Pasolini’s unforgettable portrait of Jesus.

It may come as a surprise that one of the greatest films about Jesus Christ was made by Pier Paolo Pasolini, a Marxist and outspoken atheist. Yet, The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964) is a deeply reverent and strikingly raw portrayal of Christ’s life. Inspired by a chance reading of the gospels while confined in a hotel room during a papal visit, Pasolini chose Matthew’s account, believing John was too mystical, Mark too crude, and Luke too sentimental. The result is a visually stunning, unsentimental, and politically charged interpretation of the gospel, making this one of the most unique and powerful biblical films ever made.
