Final Descent x HUSET: Yngel + Berlinde Deman (BE) | Vinterjazz

 It will be a cozy and intimate evening when Final Descent invites and Huset you to Musikcaféen for a night of minimalist guitar improvisations by the Danish duo Yngel and the monolithic drone soundscapes of Berlinde Deman, featuring her improvisations on the rare proto-tuba instrument, the serpent.

Yngel (DK)

Yngel ventures far beyond traditional boundaries, taking their creativity and guitar techniques to uncharted territory. Using alternative playing methods and bows crafted from stone, they redefine what is possible on an electric guitar.

At the heart of Yngel are two innovative composers and guitar pioneers, Emil Palme and Taus Bregnhøj-Olesen. Their music grows from the roots of folk melodies, infused with a passion for the romance of neoclassicism and the adventurous spirit of the avant-garde. Longing melodies and harmonic improvisations form the foundation of their shared expression, characterized by a fragile complexity and a melancholic resonance.

Berlinde Deman (BE)

The serpent, a twisted, snake-like wooden instrument, is a predecessor to the tuba. Originating in Gregorian chant traditions, it later found its way into French military music in the 18th century before fading into obscurity.

Belgian tuba player and improviser Berlinde Deman, best known as a member of the groundbreaking improvisation ensemble Flat Earth Society Orchestra, has revived this mysterious instrument. She has developed a repertoire of improvised drone landscapes that highlight the serpent’s warm tones, circular breathing techniques, and electronic effects. The result is a captivating sonic universe, where deep frequencies create the backdrop for a stark, minimalist soundscape one can lose themselves in.
