Some films shine brightly in their time but deserve renewed attention. This series brings four underappreciated gems from four different countries back to the big screen. In April, we present Romper Stomper (1992), Geoffrey Wright’s raw and unflinching look at violent right-wing extremism in Australia. A young Russell Crowe delivers a chilling performance as the leader of a neo-Nazi gang, in a film that remains disturbingly relevant today.

It may come as a surprise that one of the greatest films about Jesus Christ was made by Pier Paolo Pasolini, a Marxist and outspoken atheist. Yet, The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964) is a deeply reverent and strikingly raw portrayal of Christ’s life. Inspired by a chance reading of the gospels while confined in a hotel room during a papal visit, Pasolini chose Matthew’s account, believing John was too mystical, Mark too crude, and Luke too sentimental.

Romantic comedies often follow a familiar formula – but 500 Days of Summer turns the genre on its head. The story of Tom and Summer isn’t a classic love tale; instead, it’s a sharp, moving, and at times humorous portrayal of infatuation, expectations, and heartbreak. Is it a romantic comedy? A tragedy? The film plays with both, creating an original and irresistible story that is as charming as it is unexpected.

Director Sophie Fiennes enhances the experience by placing Žižek inside classic film scenes, adding a playful and visually striking dimension to his reflections.

Drummer and composer Rino Sivathas has made a name for himself on the Norwegian jazz scene in recent years with a forward-thinking and visionary style. Alongside his participation in various projects, his own ideas and compositions have been simmering over time, culminating in an energetic and unpredictable solo project. Here, jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music merge into a soundscape characterized by beats, synths, and fluid improvisation. It’s groovy, super tight, and raw all at once—a fresh and open space where listeners are invited into the warmth.

This Cuban ensemble brings together a vibrant lineup of internationally acclaimed musicians, each contributing their unique voice to the Afro-Cuban jazz tradition. The ensemble features Cuban percussionist Bárbaro “Machito” Crespo, the dynamic Eliel Lazo, bassist Yasser Pino, singer and percussionist Mayke Castellanos, and Polish pianist Artur Tuźnik.

On Friday, May 9th, Musikcaféen sets the stage for a unique evening of experimental electronic music. American artist Beau Wanzer has been a key figure in the U.S. underground scene for over a decade, releasing music on influential labels such as L.A. Club Resource, Rush Hour, and The Trilogy Tapes. His raw, analog sound creates an intense atmosphere where the distorted and industrial meet the danceable.
